Academic Plaster Study

This plaster model reproduces the foot of the famous statue of Hermes with the infant Dionysus, attributed to the Greek sculptor Praxiteles and housed in the Archaeological Museum of Olympia. Discovered in 1877 in the Sanctuary of Hera, the sculpture is considered one of the most significant masterpieces of classical Greek sculpture.
The Hermes of Olympia is also one of the rarest works attributed to Praxiteles that has survived to us in almost complete condition.
Precisely for this reason, its anatomical details have long been used as models in European sculpture academies.
This cast testifies to that didactic tradition, preserving the formal clarity and plastic presence that made these models fundamental tools in the study of sculpture.
